How Good Music Can Help You Cope With The Pressures Of Teen Life



Most of the teenagers consider their life incomplete without music. According to teenagers, music is an integral part of their life and it helps them in dealing with many pressures they face within their personal and social circles. Most of the teenagers spend more than two hours a day listening to music as stated by the New York Times. According to the study, listening to music often has a positive impact on the life of the teenagers. The main benefit is that it helps in enhancing their mood and sometimes even provides an escape. It also provides them an outlet for emotion and creativity especially when they write or sing songs. Below are a few other ways in which music helps teenagers cope with pressures of their life:

  1. Identity

The most frequent question teenagers ask themselves is “who am I?” and “what is my identity?” Often, adolescents can identify with the theme of the music.Whether it is emotions of sadness, happiness or even political and sociological themes, they feel like music speaks directly to them and what they feel. Identifying with music can be very helpful for them especially for those who are not comfortable discussing their emotions and problems with their elders, family, parents, siblings and even their friends. They are able to identify and channelize their own emotions through the lyrics of a song. This helps them get in touch with their own dilemmas.


  1. Identification with a certain group

There are various categories of music that may vary from individual to individual. Every teen has a specific taste in music. Some of them prefer punk rock while others prefer slow country songs. A shared love for a specific genre of music gives them a common interest or hobby and also acts as a base of a possible friendship. Arranging concerts for under-21 is one of the most supervised and safest social events where teens can easily go and enjoy being themselves and do not have to worry about their parents or elders. In this way, they can take a break from their hectic daily life and enjoy the moment by discussing their favorite songs with friends.

It is a common knowledge that repressing emotions is unhealthy for a person’s mental well-being, so music provides a channel for teens to express themselves by either playing or listening to music. Young individuals who write their own song lyrics and music are able to express their emotions which they may not be able to vocalize otherwise. According to researchers, teens who tend to keep their emotions bottled up are more inclined to panic and anxiety attacks.

Music does not only help in coping with emotional issues, but it also helps students in getting better grades. According to a study conducted in 2006, it was identified that children who take music lessons tend to have a better IQ and perform well in academics as well. The Stanford University School of Medicine concluded that music helps teens in increasing their attention span, making predictions and improving memory. Moreover, the Australian Music Association found that music education helps a child to have better problem solving and reasoning skills along with better language performance. It is not necessary that all genres of music are distracting and violent.

  1. Catharsis

Psychologists agree that any kind of involvement in music whether it is as creator, performer or as a listener is cathartic for teens. Song writers or singers use lyric writing as a form of purging.  When asked, many teenagers described music as their personal therapy. It does not matter whether a teenager is dancing wildly to a song. The mere act of listening does the job. This experience is a way of dealing with various emotional changes.
